Hypertension and gout: twelve panels for two institutions

Two non-communicable diseases that come up most often, each covered in two sequences of three panels.

My roleVisual designer and layout for the series. The substance follows Puskesmas Cakung's guidance for the hypertension sequence and Poltekkes Kemenkes Jakarta III's for the gout sequence; I set the order of the messages and made the illustrations.

The situation

Hypertension and gout are both conditions that go unfelt until they have already caused complications. At the clinic counter and in community service sessions alike, the question is rarely what the disease is, but what am I still allowed to eat and which numbers are still normal.

Who it was for

Residents aged 35 and over, many of whom have already been tested and told their numbers but have not changed their habits. They read on a phone, often after a check-up or a counselling session, once they are back home.

Approach

I built each topic as two sequences. The first talks about lifestyle and opens with what can still be changed; the second serves as a reference for numbers and symptoms. For gout, one panel carries the list of foods to eat and to avoid, because that is what gets asked again.

Craft and compliance

The two topics were made for different channels, so they do not share one layout. The hypertension sequence uses vertical panels, the gout sequence uses 1:1 panels. Blood pressure figures are set as a table rather than prose, and the food list runs in two columns side by side so it can be compared at a glance. Everything stays legible in black and white.

Outcome

Six hypertension panels were published through Puskesmas Cakung's official channel. Six gout panels were used as community service material for Poltekkes Kemenkes Jakarta III.

Evidence The only evidence is the material files and the publication numbers of the official channels. Blood pressure and uric acid were not measured before and after, so an improvement in the figures cannot be claimed.

Reflection

For gout I first listed only the foods to avoid, and readers asked what they were still allowed to eat. Two columns side by side answered that, and I used the same approach for hypertension.
